Getting Our Hands Dirty

Hands on volunteerism informed our thinking for the new website

Get your hands dirty. It's one of the most important lessons a marketing company can learn. Only by experiencing the products and services of your clients first hand can you put yourself in the shoes of customers. And only then can you develop the kind of familiarity with their business that leads to breakthrough communications. So when Habitat for Humanity of Central Arizona came to us looking for a new website design, we knew it was time we strapped on a tool belt for a good old-fashioned barn raising.

It turns out that Habitat for Humanity is about much more than just home building. The true spirit of the organization is found in the volunteers who give themselves to the cause of improving the lives of others.

Average people from all walks of life who give freely of their time, striving to master nail guns, circular saws and the fine art of calking in order to make the dreams of someone less fortunate come true. Homeowners are also a part of this crew, building equity with their own sweat and creating a pride of ownership that few of us can match.

Eight hours of satisfying hard work and four Ibuprofens later, we began the slightly less daunting job of building Habitat a new online home. The most important person to any website we create is the user, and in this case we made sure to focus on two of the organization's most important audiences: those who donate their time and money to the mission, and the people who need those donations. At every turn, the site uses imagery that depicts the volunteers and the individual efforts put into every home.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is so enthusiastically devoted to helping others that it becomes contagious. Soon enough, you're pitching in just to see what building a dream feels like. Blistering our hands on homebuilding hardware made a big difference when it came time to code website software. A little sweat and a few slivers did wonders in helping us build a site true to the giving nature of one of the world's best ideas, and one of its most inspirational charities.
